Neutron Star Binaries as Central Engines of GRBs
نویسنده
چکیده
We describe the results high resolution, hydrodynamic calculations of neutron star mergers. The model makes use of a new, nuclear equation of state, accounts for multi-flavour neutrino emission and solves the equations of hydrodynamics using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics method with more than 106 particles. The merger leaves behind a strongly differentially rotating central object of ∼ 2.5 M⊙ together with a distribution of hot debris material. For the most realistic case of initial neutron star spins, no sign of a collapse to a black hole can be seen. We argue that the differential rotation stabilizes the central object for∼ 102 s and leads to superstrong magnetic fields. We find the neutrino emission from the hot debris around the freshly-formed, supermassive neutron star to be substantially lower than predicted previously. Therefore the annihilation of neutrino antineutrino pairs will have difficulties to power very energetic bursts (≫ 1049 erg).

On the viability of neutron star black hole binaries as central engines of gamma-ray bursts
I discuss three-dimensional SPH simulations of neutron star black hole (BH) encounters. The calculations are performed using a nuclear equation of state and a multi-flavor neutrino treatment, general relativistic effects are mimicked using the Paczynski-Wiita pseudo-potential and gravitational radiation reaction forces. Most of the explored mass range (14 to 20 M⊙) has not been considered befor...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملAccretion Models of Gamma-Ray Bursts
Many models of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) involve accretion onto a compact object, usually a black hole, at a mass accretion rate of order a fraction of a solar mass per second. If the accretion disk is larger than a few tens or hundreds of Schwarzschild radii, the accretion will proceed via a convection-dominated accretion flow (CDAF) in which most of the matter escapes to infinity rather than fa...
متن کاملJa n 20 07 A two component jet model for the X - ray afterglow flat segment in short GRB 051221 A
In the double neutron star merger or neutron star-black hole merger model for short GRBs, the outflow launched might be mildly magnetized and neutron rich. The magnetized neutron-rich outflow will be accelerated by the magnetic and thermal pressure and may form a two component jet finally, as suggested by Vlahakis, Peng & Königl (2003). We show in this work that such a two component jet model c...
متن کاملThe Collapse of Neutron Stars in High-mass Binaries as the Energy Source for the Gamma-ray Bursts
The energy source has remained to be the great mystery in understanding of the gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) if the events are placed at cosmological distances as indicated by a number of recent observations. The currently popular models include (1)the merger of two neutron stars or a neutron star and a black hole binary and (2)the hypernova scenario of the collapse of a massive member in a close bin...
